Alaska 2013, Day 21, Cassiar Highway
Saturday June 22, 2013
It was about an hour drive to the Cassiar turn off. After 10 minutes on the Cassiar there are no
more houses. From here on only an occasional house at one of the 4 or 5 towns along the Cassiar. I stopped at Bell 2 Lodge and put on the stone guards.
The road is good all the way to Dease lake, maybe 150 mi from the N end. After that the N end of the road has lots of chuck holes, no gravel patches, just bumps. Averaged like 40 mph due to either grades, turns or bumps. This drive is scenic, the road runs though a couple mountain valleys and along some lakes. Still snow on some of the mountains. We saw 4 black bears along the Cassiar, a few looked young.
We started the Cassiar at 10:30 AM and exitted the N end at 10 PM. We drove on to Watson Lake (16 mi) so we would be there at the start tomorrow.
Stayed at Downtown Campground, just a parking lot. Run by a guy from Scotland, said he could never have a "gold mine" like this back home.
469 Miles today.
4983 Miles so far.
