Alaska 2013, Day 27, Whitehorse YT to Tok AK
Friday June 28, 2013
Made Haines Jct by 2:00. The road was good all the way to Haines Jct. Road gets worse from here as you get closer to the border. Stopped at Kluane Park (Sheep Mtn), no sheep. Mountains surround Kluane lake. Mountains to the west are snow covered. I don't remember the mountains along this drive from Beaver Creek to Haines Jct, really something. Some sort of wild pea flowering (dark pink) along the road here.
We saw a cow moose and calf next to a pond about an hour from the border (Beaver Cr).
Many of the ponds had swans (trumpeter?).
When we got 1 hour from the border we started getting a lot of haze, border guard said there was a big wildfire over in the park.
Crossed the border about 8:00 (AK time). Road between Canadian customs and US customs is really bad. Totally removed and in places washboard and warn to the river gravel bed. On the US side the road was really good.
Campgrounds in Tok are ~40% or less full. Got into Sourdough CG at 9:30.
495 miles today.
5867 miles total.
